BMB Dud

My doctor, realizing my anxiety level wouldn't be relieved until the bone marrow biopsy was declared free of cancer, went into the lab on New Year's day and got the results. He called me to say the biopsy shows NO CANCER! I have officially beaten the big C, took my 1 in 15 chance, dodged every bullet, and here we are. There will still be physical challenges, the possibility of graft versus host disease as they reduce the immunosuppressants, but so what, I'll take it. Weekly visits to Stanford will turn into monthly visits and then no visits.

Maurice summed up beautifully the question of my life in this poem he wrote in the comments on the last post, repeated here:

John's big new year adventure,

who are you now, becoming?

do not take a picture of me
capture me
forever frozen
as i was for a moment
let me paint a picture of myself for
you
as i am now
in this moment with you
becoming

are we who we think we were?

peace time
what to do
after the celebration
rest a bit let your soul catch up

Just answering the question 'Who do I think I was?' is near impossible. I keep morphing. There must be some core element to each of us, and I feel I've boiled off a lot of the fat surrounding that element by sitting too close to the fire. The smell of burning hair still fills the air. I keep feeling around myself to get at the core of me.

Winter is over here in SLO (two brutal weeks), so we are throwing open the doors and windows and airing out our lives. I have hacked through some of the jungle that grew up in my absence, and now that living seems likely, greet each day with thanks to God for a chance to start anew.

    “The Boo Qwilla Thrilla”
    Recap – Final Round

PICC Line Sports journalist, Kant Vacuum, announced today that HolyCowCrazyPants emerged victorious from this week’s final round of his bout against challenger “Leukemia Tyson.”

As CrazyPants entered the ring for the final round, he could be seen scanning the landscape for his favorite PET. With his focus distracted, the Champ was plugged with a bmb slice that pierced deep to the bone. The challenger followed the bmb with a lidocaine uppercut to the iliac crest area. Blood was drawn early in the fight from the Champ.

As the fight progressed, HolyCow’s favorite PET came into focus, appearing to give the Champ his second wind. After ingesting a bag of saline, CrazyPants danced around a double creatinine jolt from the challenger. Although some tissue was clipped away from the Champ during the fight, his engraftment remained strong.

Working in the Champ’s corner on the first day of this new year, Doc checked and rechecked biopsy results and declared the Champ showing no signs of harboring any little leukemia bastards. The Champ quickly regained his composure and threw down half his meds and pulled out his port, announcing his victory to the challenger. The challenger was seen slinking from the ring and disappearing into the Duck Scum Pond.

As HolyCowCrazyPants exited the arena, the spectators could hear the sound of surf and the distinct ring of a golf ball being hit with the sweet spot of a driver.

    You Da Man John ! ! !

  2. Johnny it is lucky for me and Mo he has you to write with...my brain just doesn't go to too many philosophical questions past who put the hot in hottentot...

but I am sure it will be a great partay! won't say I wish I was there because I'd be lying. I am not that sociable without a keyboard and caffeine...but I'll be looking forward to hearing about the effects of that many badass cancer-kickers eating that many beans as I'm sure only you would be able to tell it.

maybe we blog bar visitors have a party here for the renaming ceremony!

  4. Whoohoo! Way to go! Welcome back! Couldn't be happier for you. Before you get back to "normal" may I recommend that you read Alan Alda's new book, Things I overheard while talking to myself. It's a fast read and appropriate.
Much love to all you Fiores.
