Before and After
It's Dana again. John has just finished showering (sheesh, what a struggle while attached to eight lines) as I started typing this. I asked him if he wanted me to write anything here for him. These are his words.
Far off, slowly, a figure emerges. As he approaches, the damage is evident. He moves like a wounded animal.
In earlier days there was no time measure for a round of a fight. It ended when it needed to. I certainly needed it to end. I don't know how long this round has been going on, but it is hell. The only reason I'm writing this now is because Dana volunteer to and she had taken some pictures.
I've been slammed hard and long. Since the transplant I've had no food or drink. I'm tethered to an IV pole. I lie here in a semi-stupor all day fantasizing about ice water.
Dana is back writing now. John is holding pretty steady. He continues to be in great discomfort but he was still able to beat me at Cribbage yesterday. He is running a slight fever off and on which they are controlling with Tylonol. They are giving him antibiotics just in case there is any infection, but they say some slight fever is common. The mucositis is the most difficult to deal with. His mouth and esophagas are swollen, raw, and bloody. He has a rash on his back, his limbs are swollen, and there is some fluid in the lower lungs. All this is being addressed. He is still on IV pain meds but they have reduced them, at his request, so that he can read. He has a button he can push every 15 minutes for more pain med relief if he wants to. The med cocktail has made him shaky and weak.
Here is a before and after. The squeamish may wish to look away. It really does look as if he's been in the ring with Mike Tyson. Our hero is down but not out and his opponent isn't pulling any punches. If the docs are right, this round will last another week or so. I wish there were some way to make the time pass more quickly, but on we go. These photos were taken a week apart.
Gee John, I'd hate to see photos of you if the doctors thought you were doing poorly. I hope this ordeal is over soon. I'm ordering those WBCs to get to work.... Keep up that fighting spirit. And by the way, maybe once this is over you should get into a cribbage tournament, if you can beat Dana even in this condition.
ReplyDeleteDana, we miss you and are thinking of you both. I hope the new apartment is working out well.
Love, Lisa
well how did the old expression go...Billy would remember...I think you look pretty good for somebody in your condition?
ReplyDeleteand I'm trying to respect the whole privacy in hibernation thing (like THAT lasted almost a whole day!) but I gotta know--
what the heck are you reading that is good enough to inspire you to forgo the Fall of Love juice?
even from a distant horizon and limping, good to see you on the long road home. I have it through my head that without you the blog would not go on...and I know you wrote a will and warned us of the dangers and unknowns...
but I get pretty choked up if I even ATTEMPT to think what my life would be like without Mac and Manitoubo!
so PLEASE keep doing whatever it takes to have the feast ready for those returning prodigal cells!
love
mullaney
John/Dana:
ReplyDeleteThanks Dana for keeping the flow of info coming even though it is painful to hear and see. Know that the Red Sox have been contacted, they responding back promptly and their support is on the way. Great organization! I hope John that the nurses give you what you need to enjoy the game tonight. Hang tough John! Sending you WBC and all the other support we can thing of.
Matt & Marian
John Do whatever you can to get the ensure/protein replacement drinks down. I did not have the mouth sores that you are going through but eating was basically not existent for me during this ordeal. I started in Jan at 200lbs. I was discharged in June at 132 LBS. the sox are on tonight and texas at oklahoma on sat.Other good college games are also on Sat. Pat are playing sandiego monday night.Hopefully some of those games can help take your mind off of things. Bill. p.s. can someone explain the R.I. California connection?
ReplyDeleteHi Bill, John is from Rhode Island but has lived in California for about 25 years now having married a native Californian--me! Wow to your weight loss. John has actually gained weight, though I'm sure it's just fluids. Hope things are going well for you.
ReplyDeleteLisa, John actually thought he looked pretty good in that photo and asked if there wasn't another one where he looked worse. There was, but I am a discriminating editor. The new place is good. Just minutes away. Love to you and Manuel!
Matt and Marion, thanks for all your good energy and for putting in a good word with the Sox. When John was here three years ago, he got a birthday card from Larry Bird and thought that was so cool.
Pat, John is reading All the Pretty Horses by Cormac McCarthy, a western. But when I asked him if it was good he just shrugged so I wouldn't rush out and buy it just yet. By the way, you'll be pleased to know that our new place is just a couple of blocks from the library.
Not much new to report today. John has been sleeping a lot and otherwise things are about the same. The good news is that we are half way through this stage if all goes as planned. Thanks to all for your good wishes and your WBCs.
Dana
Wow John,
ReplyDeleteI think you look bitchen buddy. With what yer goin through, you don’t look any worster off than many of the rednecks down here in Alabama at the local trailer bar. In fact, I don’t think you’d have any problem at all gettin hit on by some a these ho-spice mammas down here.
Hey, I hit the little white ball full of little leukemia bastards a bunch of times for you today. And I mean a bunch. It felt good.
I will continue to stand by before I announce the current round. However, I have virtually no doubt who’s going to take the round.
While all you R.I. folks are pulling for the Red Sox, this former Philadelphia boy has his eye on the Phillies. With all the noreasterners on this site, this could get interesting when it comes down to the Phillies and the Red Sox. Pat, you’ll pull for me – won’t cha?
You Da Man John – always and all ways. Hang in there my friend. You can kick this shit.
Mac
Hey Brother John: You look alot better in Dana's pic than I had imagined, just very gutsy, only a little battered and definitely undefeated. Heck, you look better than I do most mornings! I'm just very glad to see you are in the fight and it must be working if you can even beat game-wizardess Dana. I hope that healing muzak we sent is lighting up the WBCs, maybe that is what your fever really is all about...your body pounding the drums and lighting the bonfires to welcome you back from your trip down the River Styx. Ha Ha, they didn't realize you brought along your paddle. Those misery-inducing leuco-bastards are already dead-they just haven't figured it out yet. Sending thoughts of pure icy blue glacier-melt water from before the dawn of civilization rushing at you! (After all, might as well get something worthwhile out of global warming) Lots of love to you and Dana too! Frank
ReplyDeleteJohn,
ReplyDeleteThat's supposed to be a bad picture? All things considered I would say you look pretty damn good.
I only wished you couldn't have eaten at the office when you would break out the brownest banana I had ever seen a human consume. Bananas are supposed to be yellow and eaten while still having the consistency of a ripe fruit, not baby food. To each his own I suppose. Be sure to let me know when you can handle some cookies and I'll whip some up pronto.
It looks like the BoSox took care of business last night and Texas has already put the smack down on Oklahoma. The BCS waters are murky at best now. The Celtics look strong already but it is the preseason so we all know that doesn't mean a whole lot. The Bruins, well, they are the Bruins so we won't talk about them for now. On the up side, both Chicago teams were eliminated so we know the planets will stay in alignment.
Keep up the fight and I wouldn't want to see what Tyson looks like at this point. He must have thought you would pull a Kimbo Slice or take a knee. He picked the wrong dude to mess with especially given the army of support you have on your side (secret weapon still waiting to be unleashed). Bob 'n' weave and be sure to keep your hands up.
Some pictures are forthcoming. Miss you a ton my man, keep up the good fight. Thank you so much for keeping us all up to date Dana.
Mac this is just for you.
ReplyDeleteAll other eyes look away.
I said AWAY.
Recently on another friend's blog (pen on fire by barbara demarco) I saw a nice story about her baseball addiction and being so obsessed about the Angels winning against the Red Sox that she researched and prayed to the patron saint of baseball. (WHO KNEW there was one?)
Anyway, St. Rita. and if anybody can lure a saint away from the angels I am sure it is you.
put out some beer and hot dogs on a little altar out back of the pick-up.
and if anybody takes a break off watching sports and wants to give their WBCs a laugh to boost their little immune hearts before sending them to E-unit, check out MSN-videos-SNL town hall debates from this past thursday.
most people besides me probably stay awake late enough to see it when it was on; but if not, I really learned a lot from the Weekend Update financial expert-check it out.
See if his plan reminds you of anybody we all know and love not mentioning any names.
ps. to Dana from Mo
he was so happy that you transcribed John's message which words he believes are a direct answer to his request for more words...
but he is a little worried with you doing the writing does that mean John is becoming...
a dictator?
Hot Damn Pat,
ReplyDeleteI don’t even know what all y’all said there. We don’t do no prayin fer baseball here in Bama. Wir jis lyken sum poke ribs an hangin fer ho-spice an watch’na Crimson Tide Roll. Udderennat, idunnoshit..
Mac
Pat,
ReplyDeleteDon't encourage him! I have to live with him!
John,
ReplyDeleteThe qwillas are here. They have come to transport you. The fight is over. You must lay back and be as comfortable as possible. They will wrap you and lift you far from here. You must concentrate first you must feel them lifting you. Feel each body part tingle as they raise you. Feel your feet tingle along with your head and neck, the tingling in your shoulders as you rise. You need to let go and feel your body rise. You may think you are sleeping but when you wake you are here.
The pool is dark and still. There’s a waterfall behind you in the west. The water is cold, it stings like tiny diamonds touching your skin and glancing off. You move your limbs; the water is like soft, cold velvet. The sky appears to be on fire. The mountains in the east are still black but the waterfall shines red as if it is a volcano spewing its center. The pool is green as the light raises. The sun rises slowly, filling the sky with red and purple hues, as if from the brush of Monet.
You feel the gentle warmth as the sun rises above the mountain. There is a movement in the sky, an eagle flies overhead, it screeches its high pathetic call to its mate and soars to the west flying over you, you stare into its bright yellow eye, it lifts and lands on its nest on the edge of the western mountain.
Something moves in the water, you see there are rock ledges below the surface. The pool is deep, so deep, but clear, the rock ledges are wide and shallow in places, you find a wide, smooth ledge to rest. As you settle you realize you must drink. The climb was hard. There were places that you felt you were caught. The climb was nothing you could have anticipated. You were snarled and bitten; the heat was relentless at times. You lost your footing and needed help; there was someone there, someone with strong blood pumping through her veins. She held out her hand to you and she helped you climb this mountain
You drink. The water is almost sweet. Cold and pure. It slides down your throat soothing your esophagus, gulping, your mouth becomes numb from the cold and the chill slides through the burn of your body. You can no longer feel the heat inside. You take a long deep breath, lean into the rock face and rest.
As you move slowly thru the water there is a splash. You turn to the western mountain and see someone high above you. He’s swinging a stick. The light reflects below the hat. He’s wearing glasses. He hears the call of the eagle and drops the stick.
“Damn. I’m ten feet from an Eagle’s nest.” He wants to reach for the binoculars but they are in the golf bag. He’s afraid to move. He stares into the yellow eye of the eagle. Transfixed, thrilled.
There is someone else. Moving towards you. Lower ground. He carries a stick, a stick with stones in it. He is spouting poetry. H he’s not alone there’s a woman behind him she sees the splash and laughs, “There’s some fool hitting golf balls”
The sticks and stones guy raises his eyes to the west.
You are never alone.
Chrissie
ok Chrissie I will try to be more considerate...
ReplyDeletebut, honey, y'all gotta admit that boy taks 'boutismuch in-currigmint as a billy bass plaque set on motion sinsitive now don' he?
John and Dana,
ReplyDeleteI woke up hurting today but guess what..............I ain't going to complain, thanks to you. Hang in there, both of you.
Janice
Pat,
ReplyDeleteDo you ever sleep? 4 AM Girl?
Now I have been around a while and I've lived with Maco whaco for almost 30 years but a "plaque set"? Do enlighten me. Please.
C
C
ReplyDeleteyes but only when everybody else is awake.
and at that time of the morning, all coffeed up, I start to think everybody has had one of those plastic talking fish you hang on the wall and if a kid get's their hands on the on/off button and sets it on "motion", you just walk by it and the head bends out and it starts singing take me to the river.
Billy the Bass?...
guess it's a northern thing--people give them as Christmas gifts, probably because somebody gave it to them last year.
anyway, sorry to assume such esoteric knowledge of singing fish wash more common than it is.
but all is not lost. when Mo got up and read that, he said John will be sure to see why he has to start writing again soon!

Hi John & Dana,
ReplyDeleteThis is Robyn girlfriend of Curt Lowgren (just had a BMT on 8-5-08) in SLO. Curt is still up in the H.O.M.E. on the Stanford campus. I just read your post on Curt's blog and wanted to let you know that there is light at the end of the tunnel.
Dana I know how hard it is for you to watch someone you love go through something so painful and be completely helpless. John is in the middle of the worst part. I don't know if you are up @ Stanford or here in SLO but if you would like to get together and talk, I'm here. I'm going back up to Stanford on Thurs for 4 days and Curt and I will definitely make a point to go see John. It will be good for him to see what life will be like for him in 60 days.
Rich & Laura O'Neil were a huge comfort to me. When Curt was going through his stage 4 mucusitis I called Rich almost in tears asking him how long this was going to last. Just seeing Rich walking around town doing normal activities without his mask is such an encouragement to me. He's 7months into this process and given his prognosis, he's an inspiration to beating the odds.
Hang in there you two. The journey will be difficult but the distination will be glorious.
Robyn
Hi Dana,
ReplyDeleteIt's Robyn again and I just want to say 'I have to meet you!' Doing a half marathon in the midst of everything else you're going through is amazing. You are one special person. I've done that 1/2 marathon before and it is a great run. Should be a great weekend for it and somethng that Curt and I just may have to go watch.
We will definitely ask if John is up for visitors. I totally understand. Even if we just pop in say Hi and introduce ourselves. I'd love to meet him and give him a few words of encouragement and be on our way.
I have to leave Sun PM to come back to SLO. I work here during the week and go to Stanford Thurs PM for 3 day weekends to give Curt's Mom a break.
My prayers and blessing are with your family. Good luck this weekend!
Robyn
John, you don't look so bad, I have seen much worse in your younger days after some of your famous confrontations with various friends and enemies alike. I went to the Red Sox game last night and tried very hard to bring home a win for you and me but it didn't work out.I do think that they can still do it and am still optomistic about their chances. The Patriots are another matter at this time. Pat, I wish I could finish the saying for you but I can not remember, it must be old age setting in. I hope you feel better soon. Hang in there.
ReplyDeleteBill
Hi John and Dana,
ReplyDeleteAre you guys doing okay? It's been a while since the last post.
Hugs,
G
